CHAPTER SUMMARY
In order for a person to be a leader, he or she must have followers. To effectively lead these followers, a leader must take the followers’ characteristics into careful consideration before acting. Along with considering his or her followers, a leader must also understand the situation and identify factors that can make leadership successful. This chapter discussed how followers and situational factors can have an impact on leadership. Leaders are affected by power and influence. Theories related to the effects of followers are leader-member exchange theory and participative leadership. Theories about situational factors include the LPC contingency model, path-goal theory, the situational theory of leadership, leadership substitutes theory, and the multiple-linkage model. After reading this chapter, you should understand how important it is for leaders to take followers and situational factors into account.
